The Canon Hacker Development kit or the "CHDK" is just a chunk of code that replaces the firmware of a canon camera. You can read all about it at this link: http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/CHDK Basically what it really does is lets us control the camera by loading a script onto the SD card. The script we found lets us take photos every 10 seconds and 15 second videos every 10 photos (100 seconds) All this is completely customizable. We chose these numbers for memory space of the camera. Of course, we will be doing it differently for the flight. Get the script here: http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/KAP_UAV_Exposure_Control_Script it was pretty complicated to get CHDK on our camera because we have to identify camera model and firmware level. We were using a A2500 camera with 100A firmware. CHDK has good instructions, but its still pretty hard. We decided to test this on our fish, Sushi and Bubbles. Here you can see it all: Not sponsored by "Fritos" Pretty much all this is going to be changed at one point. but for the time being. its all like this.

In this post we are going to include photos of every module of the payload. this IS what we are using, but we need these to work, we did this last flight, so we have some. We really just need to test more and make the canon camera work + the transmitter. So there you have it!
I know we have not posted for a while and we are sorry about that, but we are going to be starting once again with a new mission... The same thing! (A high altitude balloon flight and pictures of near space). This time we are going to actually make it work and succeed. We are adding new things to the box such as a radio transmitter to tell us where the box is real time. We decided to use the same old box as last mission. Of course, we had to clean it because it was sitting in a corn field for months, getting rained on, chewed by bugs, and harvested with the corn by a massive chomping machine AKA a combine harvester. And, of course, I HAD TO CLEAN IT! it was Super gross.. i can go on and on about how i didn't want to touch that thing but still, it looks good right now. |
